| The narrative film, divided into eight short stories, describes the period of turmoil in Russia at the beginning of the 15th century - from 1400 to 1423, as if seen through the eyes of the icon-monk Andrey Rublev. Separate short stories are little connected with each other, but they paint a general picture of medieval Russia, taking shape like a mosaic. The first small chapter shows the flight of a monk in a balloon.
